Working-class Asian Americans have long been consigned to working in gendered survival and service jobs.  U.S. military, civic and national practice and policy have converged to deny personhood and equitable life chances to those deemed forever foreign, suspicious and Other. The Women and Gender Studies department remains committed to understanding and confronting imperial racisms, particularly the concepts of contagion and peril, in all forms. The recent murder of Asian American women service workers in Atlanta, part of the rise of misogynist and xenophobic hate and violence in this country, brings new urgency to our work.
