Statement Acknowledging Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against César Chávez
The Department of Women and Gender Studies at San Francisco State University is aware of the serious allegations concerning César Chávez.
We condemn any and all forms of abuse, sexual misconduct or sexual violence. Deeply concerning allegations regarding Chávez’s sexual misconduct have been brought forward, and we look forward to a full investigation and justice for those impacted. We applaud and commend the courage it takes for survivors to speak out, and recognize the strength necessary to voice trauma in the pursuit of justice and accountability.
In order to ensure alignment with our values, our department will be taking action to ensure that we are not contributing to trauma experienced by survivors, and we stand firm in our support for anyone who may have experienced harm. We will develop a course of action with the respective communities and share updates as the university addresses the renaming of the Student Center building and mural.
We remain committed to community empowerment and solidarity with immigrant communities. We will always celebrate the dignity and resilience of our migrant farmworkers. Our gratitude for their labor and solidarity with their movement can never be diminished.
